Why we named this wine Verdea Traditional
Verdea is the traditional name for white wine from Zakynthos. Verdea is a traditional white wine produced on Zakynthos, an island in the Ionian Sea in western Greece, which was under Venetian rule for centuries, and you can think of it as its great stay in amphorae during long journeys on Venetian ships.
Venetian influences are responsible for the name Verdea, from the Italian word "verde" meaning "green," referring to the green color of almost unripe grapes, used to increase the wine's acidity, always ending up with ripe tregos.
Verdea first appeared in the early 16th century and has been identified with the later history of viticulture on the island.
Despite the small size of Zakynthos, many native grape varieties have been cultivated there for centuries. Characteristic proof is a 1601 poem which, in a few verses, listed 34 varieties, most of which have survived to this day! However, the name Verdea does not refer to a grape variety, but to a type of wine. The main varieties used in the production of Verdea include: Verdea Tradittonelle:
Category: Dry Wine
Region / Vineyards: Lagopodo Zakynthos
Vinification / Aging: Pre-fermentation maceration in a controlled environment, while the grapes remained in contact with the juice for 7 days (skin contact), each trego separately. Alcoholic fermentation at graduated temperatures. Aging for 12 months in third-use French oak barrels with low toast. The wine remained on its lees for 12 months, with periodic stirring.
Tasting Characteristics: Organoleptically perceptible aromas of lemon blossom, citrus, bergamot, jasmine, and white-fleshed fruits. The palate is complemented by notes of vanilla, sweet spices, and a peppery hint of ginger. In the mouth, it pleasantly surprises with its acidity. Particularly interesting is its rare ability to age and its capacity for continuous evolution in the bottle.
Aging Potential: Ready to drink. For maximum results, store it in the bottle for 7-12 years.
Food Pairing: Ideal with fish, white meats, pasta, and cheeses.
Serving Temperature: 12.5°C
