Oregano (Origanum Vulgare) is another herb originating from the Mediterranean region. Its name comes from Greek and means "Joy of the mountain". Oregano has long been used as a remedy for muscle pain.
Ancient Greeks were the first to recognize the amazing medicinal properties of oregano. It possesses strong antibiotic, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. It is used as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory agent. Oregano tea is considered a cure for treating pain, colds, asthma, indigestion, and fatigue. Its leaves and flowering stalks are a natural antiseptic due to their high carvacrol content. Oregano is rich in vitamins C, E, K, A, manganese, magnesium, calcium, niacin, zinc, and iron, among others.
Oregano is most commonly found in tomato sauces, such as pizza sauce. Many types of Italian cuisine use oregano, as do dishes from Greece, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Cuba, Colombia, and many other cultures. Oregano complements the flavor of dishes. It tastes great in herb breads, grilled vegetables, and stews.
